Another Curse in the Wild World of Sports...

A most insidious one this one is too... singling out the players who have the "honor" (and misfortune, it seems) to appear on the cover of John Madden's latest football videogame release... Hmm... see now, "Grapes" Don Cherry is not so bad at all - not a single one of his Rock'em Sock'em releases "cursed" any one player... (Well, ok, he did say all the time "you gotta love him" in reference to one Cam "The Man" Neely... and Neely retired prematurely... :( - But that was not a curse - that was the jealousy of Neely's peers! However... that is another story...)
Madden is no Cherry - he lacks the charisma, the wit, the quick-line delivery... he is not a color commentator but an analyst, anyway... he is meant to be boring - which would make his curse a boring curse too, by association... since he begat it! We will never again see the likes of the Curse of the Bambino anyway...

Madden NFL Cover Athlete Curse Continues?
23/11/2005 3:44:00 PM

With Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb out for the season the EA Sports Madden cover curse continues to gain steam!

by Todd Mowatt (with a little help from... ME - correcting his typos!)

Recently the Philadelphia Eagles announced that their starting quarterback Donovan McNabb was out for the season as a result of a sports hernia and a drubbing and subsequent groin injury at the hands of the talented Dallas Cowboys.

McNabb is also the cover athlete on Madden NFL 06 and in recent years that prestigious honor has been met with peril and intrigue.

The jinx first started back in 2001 when then Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George suffered through an injury riddled season. Then the next year in 2002 Daunte Culpepper of the Vikings ended up with a season ending knee injury.

In 2003 St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk was on the cover of Madden and his season ended with a serious ankle injury. Then in 2004 Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons was on the cover of Madden and he broke his leg.

Last year Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis appeared on the Madden NFL 2005 cover, and while he avoided a serious injury his Ravens missed the playoffs and began a downhill slide that continued into this season.

While there is no scientific evidence to support this theory and the fact that football is a rough sport, it does seem uncanny that every single year something season ending happens to the player that appears on the cover of Madden.

On the plus side of things, Madden NFL 06 for the Xbox 360 is new, improved and has plenty of impressive features that will have you playing the game long after the season ends. Watch for a few review of this game in the coming days!
